Adapting Programs of Learning for NCEA Level 3 Students during Lockdown Level 3

by - 19:20

The following is a description of the original Program of Learning for students undertaking Digital Technologies NCEA Level 3, and the adaptations that I made to the standards offered to learners during Lockdown Level 3 in August 2020.

The first project that my NCEA Level 3 students undertook earlier this year was for the standard:

AS91901 Apply user experience methodologies to develop a design for a digital technologies outcome

This achievement standard involves applying user experience methodologies to develop a design for a digital technologies outcome.  This included research in UX methodologies, and using the research in the development of design ideas etc.

The second project that the NCEA Level 3 students were undertaking in class prior to the Level 3 lockdown was for the standards:

AS91906 Use complex programming techniques to develop a computer program

AS91907 Use complex processes to develop a digital technologies outcome

These achievement standards are Digital Technologies standards and involve using complex programming techniques to develop a computer program, and, using complex processes to develop a digital technologies outcome.  This project includes the use of subject specific software, Unity and Visual Studio, in order to complete the work to the required standard which involves computer programming.   The software for this project are free downloads that have been made available to the students on the Mac desktop machines at school.  Unfortunately, the software can't be downloaded or accessed by learners on netbooks or chrome books at home, as the devices are not capable of handling the software on those particular devices.

The project that I adapted for Remote Learning in Level 3 Lockdown for NCEA Level 3, for students who had completed the first project, and were working on the second project at school, includes the following standard:

AS91611 Develop a prototype considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense

This achievement standard involves developing a prototype considering fitness for purpose in the broadest sense.  The standard is a Generic Technology standard.  This includes identifying and selecting materials, components, processes and techniques to undertake prototyping

The following is a screen recording of the changes that I made to the Program of Learning.

NCEA Level 3 Program Adaptation - Explanation

I originally sought feedback from the learners who logged into the first online lesson, to talk them through the idea of changing to a different standard during the lockdown period, the reason for the changes, and what they thought of the idea.  The two students who logged in on Thursday 14th August, both understood what I was intending to offer in terms of changes to standards during lockdown, and supported the idea.

I explained to the learners, the evidence that they could use from a previous standard, which can be identified by the asterix * in blue text.  I went through all of the different criteria and evidence shown in the Evidence Gathering Template, to reassure the students that the project is achievable, authentic, and that various aspects of the evidence genuinely connects from the previous project to this project.  I reiterated the length of time that it takes to generate ideas, test ideas and to gain stakeholder feedback, and the learners understood, how incorporating this evidence would greatly cut down the time required to complete the overall project.
